City councilors tell petitioning residents any new restrictions must come from the Legislature.
City councilors in Gardiner, Maine, say they are not interested in moving forward with new restrictions on where some sex offenders can live, despite some residents’ pleas it would make their neighborhood safer. Residents making a case for an ordinance at a meeting Wednesday were told hat the state Legislature is responsible for sex offender residency restrictions, not the city.
The councilors and Police Chief James Toman seemed to agree that, although the issue is complicated, residency restrictions likely wouldn’t give the security the residents sought and that educating children about the dangers of sexual predators is more useful.

Gee, actually using logic, critical thinking, and reason instead of emotion and fear…that’s new! Stop trying to divert the focus from the real problems in this country to a simple scapegoat like sex offenders and the boggy man.
Let’s hope that it is a trend we see ALL OVER the country and stop the hysteria and myths associated with this type of crime. America needs to wake up and have a reality check.

Wow, surreal. Maybe they could have banned all sex offenders (especially those convicted of misdemeanors) from visiting schools, parks, beaches, malls, horse races/kids are present at horse races, buses/kids are present in buses, malls-kids still, move theaters-kids, porn stores-?, 7-11-kids, jogging trails-kids, pools-kids, side walks-kids, skate parks-this is an impt one and shoe stores? Oh, even if the Sex Offender was convicted of a crime against an adult, lets do this? Ban them all? Why? Why not? It sounds good? Why not ban them from Churches and Christmas? Or, we can allow them in these places if the local police can implant a computer chip inside their bodies, force them to wear a t-shirt/jacket saying sex offender and their cars must be clearly marked? Furthermore, all sex offenders must live in a certain side of town in the same apartment building? Oh, they must also be home at 8pm and not leave until 7am in the morning? In summary, these suggestions might sound disturbing, outlandish and way out there, but how about the present park bans, beach bans, library bans and housing bans? Change MUST TAKE PLACE NOW
